14 Jun 2026 A scrappy finish by John McGinn allowed Scotland to mark their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence with a nervy 1-0 win over outsiders Haiti. Aston Villa captain McGinn fired in with the aid of a deflection just before the half-hour mark at the Gillette Stadium just outside Boston, which was filled to its 64,000 capacity with a majority of Scottish fans. They have travelled to the United States in large numbers to follow Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998 and were able to celebrate a rare victory at the tournament as they go top of Group C. It is Scotland’s first win at a World Cup since a 2-1 defeat of Sweden in Italy in 1990, and their first victory at any major tournament in 30 years, since Euro 96. Ambition, leadership promises and Antonio Conte: The story behind Scott McTominay's move to Napoli

Image
Scott McTominay is now a Napoli player, signing a long-term contract at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The midfielder has left Manchester United after over two decades of association with his boyhood club. His decision to leave was not easy, but one that was necessary to continue his career at the top level. Here's the story on how Napoli decided on McTominay, the efforts they went to in order to woo him and how he could bring unity to a club seemingly lurching from crisis to crisis. Napoli won their first Scudetto in a generation during the 2022/23 season, but they have fallen by the wayside in the relatively short period of time since. After Luciano Spalletti left the club on a high in the summer of 2023, they cycled through three managers the following campaign - Rudi Garcia, Walter Mazzarri and Francesco Calzona. Unsurprisingly, this chaos and upheaval saw Napoli finish 10th in Serie A. Antonio Conte has since been brought in as head coach having been out of work since Marc...

Scott McTominay is ‘the best Serie A signing in 2024’, with Man Utd to Napoli deal imminent

Image
Manchester United will officially confirm the departure of midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli. Scott McTominay was given a hero’s welcome as he arrived in Napoli to put the finishing touches on his £25 million move to the club. At Manchester United, McTominay had become part of the furniture, a key squad player over the past seven years since making his debut under Jose Mourinho. McTominay has provided some big moments through the years too, and it is a sad yet pragmatic decision to let him leave. While it is notable to see Scott McTominay leave, there are mixed views on the impact it will have on the Manchester United team. At the least, there is a shared view that he is a loss as a squad player. Rio Ferdinand was on record stating that McTominay is ‘huge’ for United and his sale, in his view, is a mistake. Over in Napoli, the excitement displayed by fans greeting to welcome his arrival is spelled out by the editor of local outlet Il Napolista. Massimiliano Gallo believes the move f...

Mixed feelings as Erik ten Hag prepares for Scott McTominay departure

Image
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admitted his feelings are “mixed” about Scott McTominay’s impending transfer to Napoli. The midfielder has travelled to Italy ahead of tonight’s 11pm deadline to complete a deal understood to be worth £25.4m. McTominay’s departure paves the way for the arrival of Manuel Ugarte from Paris St Germain and Ten Hag believes both deals are close. He told a press conference: “I can’t tell you more than you already know, it’s not completed yet. “We expect it (to be completed), but I can’t confirm it now.” McTominay’s move to Napoli would end a 12-year association with United since joining in 2012. He made his senior debut for the club against Arsenal five years later and became a regular in the United squad, amassing 253 appearances. Ten Hag admitted McTominay’s switch would present mixed feelings, but believes the transfer is necessary according to financial rules. “It’s a little bit mixed, I’m very happy for him,” Ten Hag said. “It’s also (a good deal) ...

McTominay, 27 has been linked with a departure from the Old Trafford club all summer, and last summer to be fair, which is happening this time.
