14 Jun 2026 A scrappy finish by John McGinn allowed Scotland to mark their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence with a nervy 1-0 win over outsiders Haiti. Aston Villa captain McGinn fired in with the aid of a deflection just before the half-hour mark at the Gillette Stadium just outside Boston, which was filled to its 64,000 capacity with a majority of Scottish fans. They have travelled to the United States in large numbers to follow Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998 and were able to celebrate a rare victory at the tournament as they go top of Group C. It is Scotland’s first win at a World Cup since a 2-1 defeat of Sweden in Italy in 1990, and their first victory at any major tournament in 30 years, since Euro 96. Steve Clarke’s team are bidding to make history by reaching the knockout stages, something Scotland have never done at the World Cup. Scott McTominay scored a crucial goal for Napoli as they put down a statement result in the Serie A title race by winning 3-2 away at fellow challengers Atalanta. The Scotland internationalist was in excellent form for Napoli as they maintained their lead at the top of the Italian top flight by six points following this impressive win in Bergamo. Third-placed Atalanta have been one of the form teams in the division this season, but Napoli are now seven points clear of them at the summit. Reigning champions Internazionale are second on 44 points and trail Gli Azzurri by six, although they could trim that gap when they play Empoli at the San Siro on Sunday. All eyes were on the Gewiss Stadium on Saturday night, though, for Napoli’s trip north. Once again manager Antonio Conte named McTominay from the start in his three-man midfield, although his fellow Scotland teammate Billy Gilmour had to settle for a place on the bench. He was an unused substitute. Napoli took the lead on 16 minutes t...

Napoli manager Antonio Conte praised the impact of Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku, both in their first season at the club, after its 2-0 Serie A win over Hellas Verona on Sunday. Napoli broke the deadlock early on when Giovanni Di Lorenzo’s shot hit the post and rebounded off goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo, while Frank Anguissa sealed the victory with a powerful long-range shot. Conte said he is still trying to find the right tactics to suit his squad, even as it secured a fifth successive league win, but that the new signings were integral in helping Napoli lead the standings by four points ahead of Inter Milan. “There have certainly been changes since the beginning of the summer, especially as I am still trying to find the right tactics for this team,” Conte told DAZN. “The arrival of Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku, in particular, made a big difference to the switch to 4-3-3. We tried a couple of different formations before we settled on this one.” The coach added that he was pleas...

Napoli moved clear on top of Serie A with a statement 3-0 win over Fiorentina on Saturday. Scott McTominay continued his strong start to life in Italy by scoring his fifth goal of the season in all competitions to finish the job after earlier strikers from David Neres and Romelu Lukaku. Napoli moved top on 44 points, a total that assistant coach Cristian Stellini described as "unimaginable." Scott McTominay applied the finishing touch to Napoli’s 3-0 win over Fiorentina with his fifth goal of the season as the Partenopei went clear at the top of Serie A. Scotland international McTominay has made an impressive start to life in Naples since making a £25 million move from Manchester United in the summer, quickly becoming an ever-present in Antonio Conte’s midfield. McTominay profited on some dozy defending to coolly finish into the bottom corner in the 68th minute and put the result beyond doubt in Florence. David Neres’ superb solo effort had given Napoli a half-time lead at th...
