Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 to mark a winning return to the World Cup

Image
14 Jun 2026 A scrappy finish by John McGinn allowed Scotland to mark their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence with a nervy 1-0 win over outsiders Haiti. Aston Villa captain McGinn fired in with the aid of a deflection just before the half-hour mark at the Gillette Stadium just outside Boston, which was filled to its 64,000 capacity with a majority of Scottish fans. They have travelled to the United States in large numbers to follow Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998 and were able to celebrate a rare victory at the tournament as they go top of Group C. It is Scotland’s first win at a World Cup since a 2-1 defeat of Sweden in Italy in 1990, and their first victory at any major tournament in 30 years, since Euro 96. Steve Clarke’s team are bidding to make history by reaching the knockout stages, something Scotland have never done at the World Cup. They had to hang on grimly at the end, but the victory puts them on course to get to the last 32, especially as t...

Napoli fans delighted with McTominay impact: ‘You cover 99% of Earth’

Image
Scott McTominay received high praise from Napoli fans on social media after a 2-0 win over Milan on Tuesday. Napoli fans are delighted with performances from Scotland international McTominay. as the Partenopei have regained the top of the Serie A table after a tough 2023-24 season. Antonio Conte’s men beat Milan 2-0 at San Siro last night, and the ex-Manchester United midfielder was once again among the top performers. The 27-year-old was rated 7.2 by Sofascore and 6.5 by Football Italia. McTominay made 47 touches, completed 93% of accurate passes, and won seven ground duels from 16. In his latest Instagram post, McTominay celebrated “A wonderful victory”, receiving praise from Napoli supporters. Over 1,000 commented on McTominay’s social media post, and most reactions were from Napoli fans “in love” with the Scotland midfielder. “He gets lost there” – Napoli warned not to use Scott McTominay in wrong position

Image
Ever since Scott McTominay joined Napoli from Manchester United, Antonio Conte has been using him in a fixed position. Instead of using him deeper in midfield, the Italian has made space for the Scotland international to operate in the final third. For McTominay, Conte has even changed his shape, often using a back four to make sure the goals he provided at Manchester United can also come for Napoli. That approach has worked, with the ex-United man shining in the final third and he has two goals to his name so far. Strangely, journalist Ciccio Marolda isn’t a fan of Conte using McTominay in the final third. In a chat with Televomero, he made his views clear. He said, as relayed by CalcioNapoli24: “McTominay? He gets lost there. I don’t agree with those who see him as a second striker, if he is moved away from midfield the team is weakened.” The view is perhaps influenced by McTominay’s physical abilities off the ball and how Napoli have struggled with the physical aspect in midfield. McTominay the player with the most distance covered in Serie A

Image
Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay has covered the most distance in Serie A so far this season, followed by Bologna’s Remo Freuler and Fiorentina’s Robin Gosens. Scotland international McTominay has covered an average of 11,911 km per Serie A game this term, more than any other player in Italy’s top flight so far. The former Manchester United star is followed by Bologna’s Remo Freuler with 11,742 km and Fiorentina’s Gonsens with 11,730 km. The stats are from Lega Serie A, reported by Sky Sport Italia. Tommaso Pobega (Bologna, 11,691 km) and Matteo Pessina (Monza, 11,682 km) complete the top five. McTominay joined Napoli from Manchester United in a €30.5m deal last summer and has already become a regular starter at the Stadio Maradona, even convincing Antonio Conte to switch to a four-man defence. McTominay has two goals and one assist in five Napoli appearances across all competitions this term.

Alan Shearer praises Scott McTominay for leaving Manchester United

Image
Alan Shearer has made his feelings known about Scott McTominay’s departure from Manchester United this past summer. Having fallen down Erik ten Hag’s pecking order in recent times, McTominay was snatched up for €30.4 million by Napoli. He signed a five-year contract with the club. Since his move, McTominay appears to have fitted in smoothly at the Italian team, scoring after just 25 seconds in Napoli’s recent 3-1 victory over Como. In Shearer’s mind, there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that leaving Man United was the right decision for the Scottish international. “It was a wise decision for Scott McTominay to move countries and experience something different, not only on a football pitch but in life as well,” Shearer insisted. “I wonder what McTominay thinks, looking back at what Man United are doing this season – or rather what they are not doing in terms of performances on the pitch. Scott will look at himself and think he’s made the right decision because it looks as if the mo...

Di Canio would ‘arrest’ Man Utd directors for selling McTominay to Napoli

Image
Former Serie A striker Paolo Di Canio says he’d ‘arrest’ Manchester United directors for selling Scott McTominay to Napoli last summer. The Scotland international moved to the Stadio Maradona in a €30m deal from the Red Devils and has had a solid start to the season under Antonio Conte, scoring twice and assisting once in eight appearances across all competitions. The Partenopei are currently the Serie A table leaders with 16 points in the opening seven matches, two more than defending champions Inter. During an interview with Naples-based paper Il Mattino, Di Canio praised McTominay and harshly criticised the Red Devils’ directors for selling the Scottish midfielder. “I’d go to Manchester United to arrest all directors,” said the former West Ham star. “How can you give away McTominay? Napoli also have a player like Neres, who is a reserve and Gilmour proved at Brighton to have the same quality as Lobotka with the ball at his feet.” Napoli’s next Serie A match is away at Empoli on Sund...

Shambolic Man Utd sees Scott McTominay to Napoli transfer saluted as Alan Shearer left wondering

Image
Alan Shearer reckons Man Utd’s struggles have vindicated Scott McTominay after his decision to quit Old Trafford for high-flying Napoli in the summer. McTominay has hit the ground running in Serie A with Antonio Conte’s men topping the table while the Red Devils have endured their worst start to an English Premier League season, languishing in 14th position with just seven points. Erik ten Hag is on the brink at Old Trafford and English strike legend Shearer believes Scotland star McTominay, seven years in the first team after coming through the youth ranks, told Betfair: “I wonder what McTominay thinks, looking back at what Man United are doing this season - or rather what they are not doing in terms of performances on the pitch. “Scott will look at himself and think he's made the right decision because it looks as if the move to Napoli is going well for him. It was a wise decision for Scott McTominay to move countries and experience something different, not only on a football pit...

United told they sold a player who could become ‘one of the best’ in his club’s history after scintillating start

Image
After pulling the curtains on his 22-year association with Manchester United in the summer, Scott McTominay has enjoyed a scintillating start to his Napoli tenure. Despite what numerous reports would have you think, it was actually McTominay’s decision to part ways with his boyhood club, as confirmed by sporting director Dan Ashworth. Speculation around the time of his sale suggested that United had chosen him to offload in order to create more room for manoeuvre around the Profit and Sustainability laws; as the 27-year-old is a homegrown product, the fee his departure generated – reportedly in the region of £25 million all-in – counts as pure profit for the club. Yet, seemingly aware that he’d again be navigating a rotational role, McTominay swapped his beloved United for pastures new, taking his talents to Naples to work under highly respected head coach Antonio Conte.  In his five appearances for the Serie A giants, he has notched two goals and one assist whilst becoming an inst...

Lukaku, McTominay and Neres: Napoli’s 90m investment pays off

Image
Besides their goals against Como, Romelu Lukaku, Scott McTominay, and David Neres have had an impressive start to the season at Napoli, suggesting the club’s €90m investment has paid off. Napoli have 16 points in the opening seven Serie A games of the season, which means they’ll spend the October break at the top of the table. Antonio Conte has been a breath of fresh air after the Partenopei’s disastrous title defence last season, when they finished 10th, outside a European placement. Lukaku, McTominay and Neres: Napoli’s 90m investment pays off However, new signings also helped the Italian tactician, as highlighted by Sunday’s printed edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport on page 18. Lukaku, McTominay and David Neres, three new players who joined the club for a combined €90m fee last summer, found the net against Como on Friday and delivered impressive performances for the Partenopei this term. Lukaku has played 363 minutes across six appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals ...

Scott McTominay strikes early as Napoli ease past Como

Image
Napoli’s Scott McTominay scored after 25 seconds and Romelu Lukaku and David Neres were also on target as they beat visitors Como 3-1 on Friday to extend their lead at the summit of Serie A. Antonio Conte’s Napoli top the table with 16 points after seven matches, four ahead of Juventus, who host Cagliari on Sunday. McTominay opened the scoring when he fired the ball into the net off a post from inside the box after being teed up by a pass from Lukaku. Como created multiple opportunities, with Nico Paz firing a powerful long-distance shot that struck the inside of a post before deflecting away to safety. They equalised through Gabriel Strefezza’s low, long-range strike that sailed through a crowded box into the bottom left corner two minutes before the break. Lukaku restored the hosts’ lead from the penalty spot eight minutes into the second half after Sergi Roberto brought down Mathias Olivera. Neres scored Napoli’s third in the 86th minute when he latched on to a through ball from Luk...

Scott McTominay highlights Why Napoli are at a different level than Manchester United

Image
Scott McTominay, now at Napoli after his long stint with Manchester United, has opened up about his transition to life in Serie A and the differences he's observed between his time in England and Italy. After spending nearly 20 years at Old Trafford, the Scottish international made a £25 million summer switch to Napoli following reduced playing time under Erik ten Hag. Under previous managers like Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, McTominay was a regular starter, but Ten Hag's system limited his role. Napoli's new manager, Antonio Conte, saw an opportunity to bring the 27-year-old into his squad, and McTominay has thrived since his arrival. He's been integral in Napoli's unbeaten start to the season, featuring prominently in three wins and a draw against Juventus. His impact has been immediate, with an assist in a win over Monza and a goal in a 5-0 Coppa Italia rout against Palermo. Speaking with Radio CRC, McTominay reflected on the differences between playin...

McTominay's Man United exit can benefit Napoli and Scotland

Image
Anyone who watched Manchester United go down pitifully to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend couldn’t fail to see the glaring deficiencies across their team, but one of the most obvious was their lack of a dynamic, box-to-box midfielder. Someone who could provide a goal threat from the middle of the park, while having the physical attributes, presence and defensive diligence to add plenty of value going the other way too. In other words, someone exactly like Scott McTominay. Steve Clarke then isn’t the only one slightly grasping for an explanation as to why the fallen giant of English football seems to have made another monumental strategic blunder in allowing McTominay – a player who has become something of a talisman for his country - to slip from their grasp. “It's not my team, that's for sure,” said Clarke, with a nod to his firm allegiance to Chelsea. “It's really difficult to know the circumstances behind their decision to let Scott leave. “I would imagine it's got ...

Robbie Savage says Man Utd really messed up when selling £25m player

Image
Manchester United’s start to this Premier League season has been nothing short of disastrous. The Red Devils sit 13th in the table after six games, and many of the problems that were present last season are continuing to persist. Indeed, Manchester United’s midfield is still way too easy to carve through, and the signing of Manuel Ugarte doesn’t seem to have helped matters, at least not yet anyway. Speaking on BBC 606, Robbie Savage has been discussing United’s ongoing midfield issues, and he’s claimed that Ugarte isn’t a good fit for United. Savage believes that Kobbie Mainoo needs to be partnered with a player who is more mobile, and, for that reason, he believes it was a serious mistake to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli for £25m this summer. Scott McTominay sale a mistake Savage shared his verdict on United’s midfield and the sale of McTominay. “He (Mainoo) needs somebody, and I’m surprised about them getting Ugarte, because Kobbie Mainoo needs someone who can get up and down, and I...
