14 Jun 2026 A scrappy finish by John McGinn allowed Scotland to mark their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence with a nervy 1-0 win over outsiders Haiti. Aston Villa captain McGinn fired in with the aid of a deflection just before the half-hour mark at the Gillette Stadium just outside Boston, which was filled to its 64,000 capacity with a majority of Scottish fans. They have travelled to the United States in large numbers to follow Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998 and were able to celebrate a rare victory at the tournament as they go top of Group C. It is Scotland’s first win at a World Cup since a 2-1 defeat of Sweden in Italy in 1990, and their first victory at any major tournament in 30 years, since Euro 96. United told they sold a player who could become ‘one of the best’ in his club’s history after scintillating start

After pulling the curtains on his 22-year association with Manchester United in the summer, Scott McTominay has enjoyed a scintillating start to his Napoli tenure.

Despite what numerous reports would have you think, it was actually McTominay’s decision to part ways with his boyhood club, as confirmed by sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Speculation around the time of his sale suggested that United had chosen him to offload in order to create more room for manoeuvre around the Profit and Sustainability laws; as the 27-year-old is a homegrown product, the fee his departure generated – reportedly in the region of £25 million all-in – counts as pure profit for the club.

Yet, seemingly aware that he’d again be navigating a rotational role, McTominay swapped his beloved United for pastures new, taking his talents to Naples to work under highly respected head coach Antonio Conte.

In his five appearances for the Serie A giants, he has notched two goals and one assist whilst becoming an instant hit with the Napoli faithful for his relentless efforts across each cameo thus far.

McTominay hailed by FIFA chief

FIFA agent Cristian Bosco Lunedi was also quick to heap praise on the Scotland international, saying (via Manchester Evening News): “You can be a winner even if you have different DNA. This Napoli is a cynical Napoli.

“McTominay will still have to prove himself in Italy, but he is potentially one of the best midfielders in Napoli’s history.”
