Scotland beat Haiti 1-0 to mark a winning return to the World Cup

Image
14 Jun 2026 A scrappy finish by John McGinn allowed Scotland to mark their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence with a nervy 1-0 win over outsiders Haiti. Aston Villa captain McGinn fired in with the aid of a deflection just before the half-hour mark at the Gillette Stadium just outside Boston, which was filled to its 64,000 capacity with a majority of Scottish fans. They have travelled to the United States in large numbers to follow Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998 and were able to celebrate a rare victory at the tournament as they go top of Group C. It is Scotland’s first win at a World Cup since a 2-1 defeat of Sweden in Italy in 1990, and their first victory at any major tournament in 30 years, since Euro 96. Steve Clarke’s team are bidding to make history by reaching the knockout stages, something Scotland have never done at the World Cup. They had to hang on grimly at the end, but the victory puts them on course to get to the last 32, especially as t...

Scott McTominay has Napoli 'goals in his blood' as Di Canio blasts Ten Hag for expensive downgrade

Image
Antonio Conte bigged up his new Scottish signing following a 2-0 Serie A win over Monza Scott McTominay has "goals in his blood" according to Antonio Conte. The Napoli star has hit the ground running since making the switch to Serie A from Manchester United. McTominay scored his first goal for the Neapolitans in last week's Coppa Italia win over Palermo and started Sunday night's 2-0 league triumph over Monza. After topping the Scotland scoring charts for Euro 2024 qualification and netting our only goal during a miserable fianls experience, McTominay was back on target for his country in the Nations League with a fine header to put Steve Clarke's men 1-0 up in Lisbon before a second half turn around capped by a late Ronaldo winner. And Napoli boss Antonio Conte reckons goalscoring is part of his new midfielder's DNA. "Scott is a player who has goals in his blood; he’s very good at making runs into the box," he said. "He has excellent technical ...

Scott McTominay scores his opening Napoli goal, netting with his first ever touch in the Coppa Italia

Image
In the last two matches, Manchester United have scored just one goal. Against Crystal Palace and Twente, the team dominated, and just lacked somebody to put the ball in the back of the net. Last season one player who found his knack for scoring was Scott McTominay, who scored a career best 10 goals during the campaign. McTominay left on transfer deadline day to sign with Napoli, deciding to pursue a new challenge, with United content to recoup £25 million. And while the £25 million is undoubtedly useful off the pitch, McTominay’s goal threat would be pretty handy on it. Scott McTominay scores for Napoli Scott McTominay was on the bench as Napoli took on Palermo in the Coppa Italia round of 32, in what proved to be a one-sided game. McTominay ran into serious problems at Napoli. Conte had to intervene

Image
Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay recently moved to Napoli, and since moving to Naples, the Scotsman has had some problems, which even his new manager Antonio Conte has not been immune to. Details: According to the Daily Mail, the club fear that the newcomer may succumb to too much temptation of Neapolitan cuisine, which is why Conte has taken McTominay's diet under personal control. A great danger to the form of the Scotsman are local ice cream and cheeses. Recall: Conte is an advocate of a strict diet for footballers, especially for those who move to his teams from abroad. He himself is a supporter of a diet with a predominant amount of vegetables and white meat rich in protein. For example, Romelu Lukaku had problems with Conte at Inter because of his excessive weight.

The Italian media were quick to react to Scott McTominay's full Napoli debut against Juventus

Image
Scott McTominay made his full debut for Napoli in a 0-0 draw against European giants Juventus, and the Italian media have been quick to react to the Scotsman’s first outing in Naples blue. The midfielder, who left Manchester United this summer after 22 years at the club, made his debut in a Serie A fixture, putting in a typically determined and hard-working performance. Antonio Conte, the new manager at Napoli, brought in McTominay as part of a slew of new signings, brought in alongside Billy Gilmour, Romelu Lukaku, David Neres, and Leonardo Spinazzola. Whilst he was unable to get a goal to go with his performance as he was known to do for Manchester United (and Scotland), he received widespread praise from the Italian media. James Horncastle, The Athletic’s Italian football expert pointed to the change in system from Conte to accommodate him, and made a wild comparison. He tweeted: “OK his number isn't Diego's No.10 but McTominay's first start for Napoli is away to Juventu...

Conte explains how McTominay inspired change of Napoli system

Image
Antonio Conte was ‘moderately satisfied’ with a 0-0 draw away to Juventus and explained his change of Napoli tactics was inspired by Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour. The Partenopei continue their positive run of results after that dismal opening 3-0 defeat to Verona, as three straight wins were capped off by this goalless stalemate in Turin. The visitors arguably had the best scoring opportunities with McTominay and Matteo Politano forcing saves, while Teun Koopmeiners and Andrea Cambiaso fired off target from promising positions with 65 per cent possession. Giving former Manchester United midfielder McTominay his first start also inspired Conte to change the Napoli tactical system to a 4-3-3. “The idea came to me because on the last day of the transfer market we got McTominay and Gilmour, plus brought Folorunsho back into the squad. The midfield then became a pretty strong group of players and we had to make the most of that,” Conte told DAZN. “We had already started working on it l...

Napoli boss defends Scott McTominay as ex-Manchester United ace suffers Ivan Drago jibes

Image
From the drizzle and the darkness of Lancashire to the sun and salt of Naples. Let’s just hope Scott McTominay packed plenty of factor 50 when boarding his flight to the South of Italy. After sealing a £25 million move away from his beloved Manchester United in August, the Carrington graduate made his Serie A debut in his new sky blue shirt before the September international break. McTominay stepped off the bench to play the final 16 minutes of a comfortable 4-0 cruise against Cagliari. But, for Radio Marte reporter Enrico Fedele, it was difficult to get the thought of Rocky Balboa’s arch enemy out of his mind. McTominay, he says, resembled Ivan Drago from afar. And not only because of his blonde hair and his sky-scraping frame. Scott McTominay left Manchester United for Napoli “Some say he resembles Fabian Ruiz, but the Spaniard is much more of a player,” Fedele says, McTominay lacking the former Napoli playmakers outrageous technical talents but hopefully making up for that with phys...

Ex-Man Utd academy chief McClair unhappy with McTominay sale

Image
The Red Devils sold homegrown talent Scott McTominay in a big money deal to Napoli. While McClair understands the financial reasons for the sale, he is not too pleased about seeing a former academy talent leave the club. “I'm very biased because Scott, of course, represents Scotland and we share the same birthday!” McClair told SportsBoom. “I can go back to times where Scott had difficult periods in his formative time as a young academy boy, but I feel very privileged to have watched him grow into the adult and football player that he is. “You're always disappointed when the players that have been there since they were eight years of age are no longer required, because there's a view that it's better to take the money. “It's been well-documented that academy products, with regards to financial fair play, go in as pure profit. The cynical side of me would suggest that it may be the case, but maybe it's just down to football terms. They think that they've got ...

McTominay and Gilmour make Napoli debuts in win

Image
Scotland midfielders Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour made their Napoli debuts in a comfortable Serie A win at Cagliari. The pair - signed from Manchester United and Brighton respectively - came on together in the 74th minute with the club 3-0 up. The match was suspended for seven minutes in the first half as opposition fans threw objects at each other and on the pitch, including fireworks. Antonio Conte's side have won three games in a row to move to the top of the fledgling Serie A table. Giovanni di Lorenzo opened the scoring at Cagliari with a deflected strike and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled their lead from Romelu Lukaku's pass. Lukaku pounced on a defensive error to score his second goal in two games with Alessandro Buongiorno heading a late fourth.

Hamsik suggests McTominay not a regular starter at Napoli after Man Utd transfer

Image
Marek Hamsik admits Scott McTominay could be his heir at Napoli, although the Scotland international may not be a regular starter at the Stadio Maradona: ‘It depends on the system.’ Hamsik released an interview with Il Corriere dello Sport to discuss all things Napoli. The Partenopei have hired Antonio Conte after a terrible 2023-24 campaign and have collected six points in the opening three Serie A games of the season. One of their major summer signings was McTominay from Manchester United, and Hamsik believes the Scotland international could become his heir at the club. “It could be. He is an attacking-minded midfielder. He loves late runs and scoring goals, like me, but let’s see,” said the former midfielder. Hamsik suggests McTominay not a regular starter at Napoli after Man Utd transfer “It depends on the system. I think he’s a big name, and he has already proved it with Manchester United and the national team—a reliable backup to Lobotka and Anguissa.” Hamsik feels that his compa...

Scotland stars Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour trained with Napoli for the first time on Tuesday and are expected to make their first appearance for the Partenopei against Cagliari this weekend. Scotland midfielders McTominay and Gilmour trained for Napoli for the first time on Tuesday after returning from international duty on a private jet on Monday night. Scotland stars McTominay and Gilmour ready for Serie A debut after first Napoli training La Gazzetta dello Sport on page 12 and Il Corriere dello Sport report that both players are expected to be involved in the next Serie A game against Cagliari at the Sardegna Arena on Sunday, September 15. It is still unclear whether the former Manchester United and Brighton midfielders will start against the Rossoblu, but the Italian newspapers are confident they’ll both be involved in Sardinia. McTominay scored two goals in Scotland’s last two games, playing the full 90 minutes against Poland and Portugal, while Gilmour was subbed off at min...

Ex-Napoli defender Scarlato: McTominay will prove big signing

Image
Former Napoli defender Gennaro Scarlato has welcomed their new signings. Scarlato admits he's a fan of former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku, who has arrived from Chelsea. Scarlato told Radio Marte: "In the current Napoli of Antonio Conte, players of depth and mentality have arrived, the experience of McTominay and Lukaku is an added value. "I believe that the Scotsman will be an important player and I think that he will soon play as a starter. The greatest resource remains Conte who changes the mentality and thanks to him, Napoli can definitively acquire the winning mentality. "Change of formation? It is normal for a coach to evaluate these possibilities, we will see if he wants to do it immediately or later. Certainly a coach knows that if to make the best use of his players it is necessary to change the playing system he does not think about it too much."

Scotland stars McTominay and Gilmour return to Napoli straight after loss to Portugal

Image
Scotland and Napoli midfielders Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour returned to Naples on a private jet on Sunday night straight after a 2-1 loss to Portugal in the Nations League. McTominay and Gilmour are ready to resume training under Napoli coach Antonio Conte after the international break. An Instagram story from Molecule.designs on Sunday night showed the Scottish pair about to get on a private jet in Lisbon and head to Naples, where they are expected to resume training with their club on Tuesday. Napoli visit Cagliari on Sunday, September 15 in the first Serie A match after the September break. McTominay scored a goal for Scotland against Portugal last night, but the home side claimed a 2-1 win with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Scott McTominay raves about former team-mate following 2-1 defeat against Portugal

Image
Scott McTominay waxed lyrical over Bruno Fernandes when asked about his former team-mate following a 2-1 defeat for Scotland in the UEFA Nations League. The Scotland midfielder opened the scoring with a header after 7-minutes, which meant Portugal had a hill to climb to force a comeback. Portugal came from behind thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo. For the latter, it was his 901st career goal. An incredible record for the former United goalscorer. Fernandes picked up a knock to his ankle during the game, but he downplayed fears in his post-match interview. Speaking after the game, McTominay only had positive words for Fernandes. He said (via TVI): “I played with Bruno for many years and he is an incredible player and person. He helped me a lot in my career. “I am very grateful to him. I wish him every success.” McTominay is another former United player with an eye for a goal. His exit, confirmed a week ago, will see him represent Serie A outfit Napoli for the fo...

Billy Gilmour on his new Italian job with Scott McTominay at Napoli

Image
BILLY Gilmour has expressed confidence that playing alongside Scott McTominay at Napoli on a weekly basis will help him to improve as a footballer and benefit Scotland in future as he looked forward to starting the latest chapter of his career over in Italy. Gilmour and McTominay spearheaded the spirited second half fightback which the national team staged during their opening Nations League match against Poland at a packed Hampden on Thursday evening. The former made it 2-1 shortly after half-time when he scored his first goal at the Mount Florida venue while the latter levelled the Group A1 encounter when he netted with 14 minutes of regulation time remaining. The duo's endeavours ultimately proved in vain - the penalty that Nicola Zalewski netted in the seventh minute of injury-time after he had been needlessly brought down by Grant Hanley meant the visitors won 3-2.  It was a desperately disappointing end to a game which Scotland, seeking to get the pain of the Euro 2024 finals...

McTominay shines brightest but Hanley flops as Scots suffer more late heartbreak

Image
Scotland kick-started their first Nations League campaign as a Pot 1 seed with a 3-2 defeat against Poland at Hampden Park Scotland’s wait for a first competitive victory over Poland continued as they began their first Nations League campaign as a top tier nation with a disappointing 3-2 defeat at Hampden Park. First-half goals from Sebastian Szymanski and Robert Lewandowski’s spot-kick for the visitors were cancelled out by strikes from Billy Gilmour and Scott McTominay. However, a stoppage time Nicola Zalewski penalty saw the poles emerge victorious on a night on frustration. The word 'freshness' had been thrown around in the build up the match with several new faces included in Clarke’s squad. However, the likes of Ben Doak and Ryan Gauld were forced to wait to make their senior international debuts after the head coach opted against making wholesale changes to his starting XI following this summer’s Euro 2024 heartache. The Scots were back on home soil having won only one g...

Napoli tipped for title after signing ‘beast’ Scott McTominay from Manchester United

Image
At least former Manchester United boss David Moyes can no longer be accused of presiding over the worst title defence in European football’s modern history. After stepping into the shoes of Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013, the traumatic nine-month reign of this doomed Scotsman saw the Red Devils go from first to seventh in the space of just one season. But not even Moyes’ Manchester United fell quite so many places as Napoli did in 2023/24. From first, to 10th. Runaway Scudetto winners last year, Napoli presided over a truly nightmarish title defence. Remarkably, almost half of Serie A will be represented in European competition this term but Napoli will not be among them. The Partenopei went through three head coaches after their title-securing tactician Luciano Spalletti rode off into the sunset, while a dramatic loss of form and a very public breakdown in relations turned Victor Osimhen’s fairytale story into a tale more suited to the Brother’s Grimm back catalogue. Antonio Conte, th...

Former Man Utd star labels Scott McTominay exit a ‘travesty’ that ‘needs to be looked at’

Image
Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones believes his old club need to take a good look at how they treat homegrown products after Scott McTominay’s ‘devastating’ exit this summer. The Scotland international was one of the standout performers in a hugely disappointing campaign for United last season that at least finished with some silverware after the FA Cup final win over Manchester City. The Red Devils ended up finishing eighth in the Premier League as McTominay notched 10 goals and added three assists in 43 appearances in all competitions. However, the addition of Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain led to United having to satisfy the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules as they offloaded McTominay to Italian giants Napoli. The 27-year-old moved to Naples in a deal worth around £25m, leading to his former teammate Jones to question the club’s transfer strategy in allowing top homegrown products to leave. Jones said on BBC Radio: “I’m gutted. I love him. He’s a wo...
