14 Jun 2026 A scrappy finish by John McGinn allowed Scotland to mark their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence with a nervy 1-0 win over outsiders Haiti. Aston Villa captain McGinn fired in with the aid of a deflection just before the half-hour mark at the Gillette Stadium just outside Boston, which was filled to its 64,000 capacity with a majority of Scottish fans. They have travelled to the United States in large numbers to follow Scotland’s first World Cup campaign since 1998 and were able to celebrate a rare victory at the tournament as they go top of Group C. It is Scotland’s first win at a World Cup since a 2-1 defeat of Sweden in Italy in 1990, and their first victory at any major tournament in 30 years, since Euro 96. Steve Clarke’s team are bidding to make history by reaching the knockout stages, something Scotland have never done at the World Cup. Shambolic Man Utd sees Scott McTominay to Napoli transfer saluted as Alan Shearer left wondering

Alan Shearer reckons Man Utd’s struggles have vindicated Scott McTominay after his decision to quit Old Trafford for high-flying Napoli in the summer.

McTominay has hit the ground running in Serie A with Antonio Conte’s men topping the table while the Red Devils have endured their worst start to an English Premier League season, languishing in 14th position with just seven points.

Erik ten Hag is on the brink at Old Trafford and English strike legend Shearer believes Scotland star McTominay, seven years in the first team after coming through the youth ranks, told Betfair: “I wonder what McTominay thinks, looking back at what Man United are doing this season - or rather what they are not doing in terms of performances on the pitch.

“Scott will look at himself and think he's made the right decision because it looks as if the move to Napoli is going well for him. It was a wise decision for Scott McTominay to move countries and experience something different, not only on a football pitch but in life as well.

“He's already scored a couple of goals, he’s developing a good relationship with Romelu Lukaku, and it looks like he's enjoying it so from his point of view, he's clearly made the right decision to leave Manchester United.”

McTominay will be a key figure for Steve Clarke ahead of their Nations League double header against Croatia in Zagreb and Portugal at Hampden as they look to get their first point on the board after two defeats in the September double header.

It’s been a harsh introduction after Scotland were promoted to the top section with the heavyweights. Shearer said: "Just like it’s a blessing for (Lee) Carsley that England were relegated in the Nations League, it’s more difficult for Scotland who were promoted.

“It's great to be able to go and play all these games but in terms of results and performances, it's always going to be tough for Scotland mixing it with the big boys.

"John McGinn is injured, he's one of their better players and if Scotland are going to compete at this level, they need every one of their players in tip top condition. It'd be tough for them even if they had a full squad to choose from.”
